Climbing Trees

We've just begun our journey and are leaving L.A. today for Joshua Tree. I always drive down Highway 5 whenever I come to L.A. because it is so much quicker, but we decided to take the 1 which is absolutely stunning. I can't believe I have spent all of this time in California and never done it! The water is a deep jewel like shade of blue and the beaches are dramatic crags of rocks which hang low over the few sandy coves. At one point we saw a huge group of seals sunning themselves on the beach, and just beyond that passed through windblown green meadows (which I'm sure will be brown soon in California's heat!). We stopped for lunch at a deli in Big Sur and marveled at the cool stillness the redwood trees radiate.
We've had a very quick stop in L.A. filled with familiar faces, hot tubs and good food, and are so excited to really get out on the road. We have heard wonderful things about Joshua tree and I'm excited that it will be our first national park stop.

I haven't had a chance to upload the photos we took on the way down from Santa Cruz, so I'll leave you with a few pics from my last days at home. These are a few of the good ones, trying to climb a tree with a 10 second timer and get a good picture is slightly more difficult than I thought it would be! I tried a new photo editing program and I like how these photos turned out a bit whimsical, it reminds me of The Magic Faraway Tree a book by Enid Blyton that I used to read all the time when I was little.
